2021 The year of self development

First of all I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to those who read my last blog post on friendships. I had an overwhelming response to my post and so many others contact me with your own story. I appreciate everyone’s comments and love and wanted to say if anyone wants to reach out I am always here 💙

February is here! Who else is glad to see the back of the January 2021? I wanted to begin this week talking about self development as I feel like this is something I am focusing on myself a lot already this year. I cannot believe it has been a whole year since this pandemic started that I think that it will change our lives forever.

I began this year with the hope that 2021 would be a “better” year. This soon faded away as we began the year with another lockdown that doesn’t seem to be lifting anytime soon. As I look back on the last year, I don’t feel like it was wasted even though it has been super frustrating at times. As a hairdresser and small business owner; I can say this last year has set me some challenges but it has also given me time that I wouldn’t usually have to develop myself. I see it everywhere and all over social media…people trying to better their fitness, their mental health, their education…whatever it may be; most of us are being given the time to reflect.

So what is self development to me? I think of self development as a way to better yourself , improving in areas you want to whether it is to be learning a new skill or overcoming bad habits. I think there are five main areas of self development; mental, social, spiritual, emotional, and physical that we can focus on. Improving in one or more of these main areas can lead to maximising your own potential. I think personal development is an ongoing thing we should practice; it is all about setting goals for yourself and putting plans in place to reach those goals.

How can I can I improve my self development? There are so many ways but maybe choose a couple you know will make a difference to your life right now and once we can get back to a slightly more “normal ” life. Maybe you want to improve your physical development by going for a walk each day or making a plan to exercise so many days a week. Maybe you want to improve your mental well being, as I know we are all struggling in some way or another. You could read some self development books or listen to podcasts to improve your mood. A routine maybe something you are lacking especially during lockdown life and this can make you feel super disorganised and unhappy. Try using a planner to put a routine in place…maybe one of the best ways to start would to be get up at the same time each day and make the most of that first hour before your day begins. There are so many ways of improving your self development. If you follow me on social media you will have seen me getting up early to begin my day before the kids and put has made me so much more productive in the last couple of weeks.

For most of us our main concern has been job security this year and at first we may have panicked especially if we got told we could not work anymore. Yet sometimes we have to sit back and look at the bigger picture as we cannot always control the outcome. Yet by bettering ourselves we can be open to new opportunities that we might not have seen under “normal” circumstances or if we had not practised self development. In turn you may feel like you can see clearer and have more energy for new options that may come your way. I know it isn’t easy but I myself have been in a situation last year where I was ready to give up everything I had worked hard for as life wasn’t playing ball. Yet I took the decision to take some time out and work on myself and gained clarity and happiness in doing so which I am still trying to improve each day.

There are so many ways we can make 2021 the year that we grew personally and made the best out of a situation that we cannot control. A few ways I have started to take action and work on myself…

  • Journaling/Gratitude diary- I bought myself a journal and gratitude diary. Whilst my diary is not filled with social engagements, it has helped me plan my day so that I can be more efficient when I am home and also when I can go back to work I will feel more organised. I also like to write down 3 things I am grateful for at the beginning of my day; I have been actively doing this since for the last 3 weeks and have found an improvement to my mind-set each day.
  • Books-Fiction, non-fiction, self help books…love them all! I love to read and always have done. I found that in my fast paced life prior to Covid-19 I would only read whilst on holiday when I had the time to do so. I am now making it a priority in my life to read for at least 15 minutes a day.
  • Podcasts/audio books- I have just started to listen to some podcasts and audio books and I am finding them really motivating.
  • Pinterest-I love pinterest! I find it a great way to save and organise my online visuals and I like to look at this most days so that I can visualise what I would like for the future/that day.
  • Exercise-I got really into exercising again during the first lockdown but fast forward a few weeks back into work life and I gave it all up because I didn’t have the time. This time round I will make it a priority and aim to do some form of exercise in the mornings before my day has begun. I find exercising really sets me up for the day and gives me a clear head so that I can face the day head on even if 10 minutes later the kids are shouting “mummy! mummy! MUUUUUUUUMMMMY!!”

Let’s use this time wisely so that we come out of this year a better, happier version of ourselves with maybe a few skills to go with it. Perhaps February will bring us a little closer to some sort of normality if not better weather as we have got to have something!

Lots of love

Sam x
