Hi all hope you’re all well. We have an exciting day ahead of us. Our 20 week scan is this afternoon and we hopefully get to find out the sex of baby Bache no 2! How exciting!!! Had lots of well wishes this morning so definitely feeling the love from friends and family. 💖
Throughout this pregnancy so far I have tried to keep up with my fitness and healthy eating. Don’t get me wrong it’s not easy to get up and go to the gym a few times a week when you’re tired and feeling sick but I really do think it’s helped me to breeze through this pregnancy so far. Those first 12 weeks were the hardest when all I wanted to eat was hugh carb starchy food but I am in the “nice” bit now where I still feel comfortable and not as tired.
For those of you ladies that I know are pregnant out there and there seems to be quite a few (baby boom!) here are my top 5 reasons to exercise and keep fit during pregnancy.
1. Exercise helps with nausea.
When I was pregnant with Macie those first 12 weeks felt like a constant hangover. I felt nauseous, tired and run down and still had to get up and go to work cutting hair; trying not to be sick at anybodys house! However with this pregnancy I felt that the days where I did ferl sick, if I got up and made myself go for a walk, go to the gym or do a home workout I felt relief from the nausea. Being active has definitely helped me out in that respect.
2. Exercise releases endorphins.
Anyone that has had a baby or who is pregnant at the moment will know that your hormone levels are all over the place. Mood swings are inevitable and one minute you can feel on top of the world and the next you are snapping at the ones you love. This was prevalent to me in my first pregnancy but again in this one I have felt happy most of the time. My husband must have thought I had lost the plot the first time round so he’s counting his luck this time! Haha. When I get out and do some exercise even if its only 20 minutes or a stroll with the pushchair, I feel amazing afterwards. Those endorphins are addictive!
3. Helps you regain your pre pregnancy body quicker.
Exercising while pregnant can help you not to gain too much extra weight so that once you have had the baby you have less weight to lose to get down to your pre pregnancy bodyweight. Again in my first pregnancy I gained around 3 stone (42lbs) and didn’t begin very small either. I was around a stone heavier when I first found out I was pregnant with Macie than with this second baby. I made it an excuse to eat everything and anything in sight. Hopefully this time round my muscles should keep their memory and I won’t gain too much extra weight by keeping up my exercising a few times a week.
4. Exercising can help with back pain.
In my hairdressing job I find that with standing up for long periods of time my back can really ache. By keeping yourself fit and active and most important keeping a strong core you can help relieve some of that back pain you may experience throughout pregnancy. A tight core will help with your posture and put less pressure on your back muscles as your stomach grows.
5. Exercise can help with stress.
Being pregnant can be a very stressful time. Again as exercise releases good hormones and high levels of endorphins it can help with stress. Just as it can help when you are not pregnant too. If you have had a stressful day and go for a walk or do a gym class almost instantly you will feel relief. Try it out…pregnant or not!
I hope this helps the pregnant ladies out there. Even if you didn’t do much exercise pre pregnancy most ladies are able to get out and do some gentle walking or swimming. Just check with your doctor or midwife beforehand that it is safe to do so.
Have a lovely day!
